I told myself I’d knock out my CPE credits before the deadline, like I always do.
Until I didn’t.

Before I knew it, December had arrived, and my CPE transcript was incomplete. I had missed the mark. And with that miss came the realization that my license, my lifeline, was on the line.
Let me be clear: In the work we do as CPAs, CPEs aren’t just checkboxes. They’re lifelines. They protect your license. They keep your competence sharp. They prove you’re committed, not just to your clients, but to the profession.
And they come with real deadlines.
When I missed mine, it wasn’t because I was lazy. It was because I assumed tomorrow would always come. I figured I could hustle through it, like I always had.
But CPAs aren’t superheroes. We’re humans with limited time, and endless responsibilities. Procrastination is not a plus. It’s a risk.
Now, I schedule my CPEs the way I schedule client meetings, early, blocked out, non-negotiable. I treat them like they matter, because they do.
If you’ve been pushing it off, thinking you’ll “get around to it,” stop. Look at your state board’s CPE requirements today. Not next week. Today. Choose your ethics course. Map your hours. Lock them in. Protect your license before life surprises you.
